What’s the alternative to making decisions?

Allowing someone else, or circumstances, to make them for you.

And that is giving up control of your life. That’s giving up all power to your life to other people or circumstance. And that will make you miserable.

It reminds me of walking through a wonderful food buffet where you could have anything you want — 0 calories! — and allowing someone else to decide what you took on your plate. Unacceptable!

So when faced with decision anxiety, is the alternative — giving up all control to others or circumstance — the preferred method? Definitely not. No matter how difficult the decision, making it yourself gives you some modicum of control.

On the flip side, of course, it also gives you the responsibility, and therefore you can’t blame anyone else.

Let’s consider that. Does it make you feel better to blame someone else? For example, you have a really bad haircut, and you decide it’s the hairstylist fault because she talked you into it. Ok, so now you’ve correctly affixed the blame — do you still have a bad haircut? So what did it accomplish? Nothing.

Instead, consider this: You have a bad haircut because you thought this was the style that you wanted, but now you see that it’s not for you. You still have the haircut, but since you’ve accepted your part in it, it empowers you — instead of making you a victim to it.

Being a victim to a decision emasculates you. Being a participator in a decision empowers you.

To reduce anxiety for your decisions, keep this in mind:

1. Stop looking for a prediction of the future.
There’s a difference in making a decision and looking for a prediction. There is likely to be a risk in most any decision more complicated than deciding on a type of dessert. Things change, people change, ideas change, desires change. The decision is made on what you know, what you believe, what direction you want to go in. The future cannot be predicted. Don’t let that stop you.

2. Be as informed as possible before making a decision.
Do what you need to do, but try to be realistic about it. For example, if you tried to read every article on decision anxiety, you’d be 100 years old before you finished — not much help, there, huh. So if you find yourself procrastinating, give yourself a time limit –”I will read 50 different articles, and talk to 10 people, and decide by 5:00 pm on Thursday.”

3. Realize that very few things are set in stone.
Maybe you have lots of things you want to do in your life, and you just seem to make a decision on what to do or how to do them all. This is “analysis-paralysis”. Instead, remind yourself that focusing on one thing right now doesn’t mean that you’re giving up others. It simply means that you have decided to get started on one project, with the realization that you can do the others at any time you choose.

4. Remind yourself of successful decisions.
One of my clients didn’t believe that she could make any good decisions until we started her keeping a list of the many good decisions she made every day. Sure some were small, but throughout her life, she began to realize that she had made many more good decisions than bad ones.

Easier decision making is really about valuing yourself and your own opinions. Believe in your ability, and trust your instincts. Appreciate your input into your decisions, and understand and accept that every single decision you make might not be perfect. Learn from it, expect the best from yourself, and you’ll get the best.

This is a thought provoking article from one of my online sources. read and enjoy.

Are you happy? Have you actually made the decision to be happy in your life?

Do you have fun living your life each day? Are you having fun living your life today, right now? If not, why not?

Wouldn’t it be terrific to wake up in the morning full of gratitude for the opportunity to live a great life today, and then to go out and live it? How would that make you feel? What would that look like for you? What would it sound like?

You can have all of that, and you can experience all of that; and you can begin to have this right now, starting today.

Do you believe me?

Clearly there is something inside of you that, at the very least, wants to believe these words. Allow me to share my story.

I spent 23 years of my adult life (not to mention most of my formative childhood years) believing that I had to live my life according to someone else’s rules. I was locked into a formula that was essentially prescribed to me by the environment (parents, schools, government, church, etc.) in which I was raised.

It went something like this: get a good education, get a good job, work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone, scrimp and save your money, put off what you’d love to do until later, avoid taking any risks, and if you’re lucky you’ll get to enjoy yourself in your twilight years.

Does this sound vaguely familiar?

In my particular case, it actually was working out reasonably well. I had a “good job”, was earning a reasonable salary and had achieved a degree of success in my life. Or at least that’s how it appeared on the outside.

But on the inside, I was miserable. I was caught up in the struggle of my day-to-day life – quite literally choosing to make it a struggle without ever realizing that’s what I was doing. I was in a sleep walk of day-to-day drudgery. I was most definitely not living the life of my dreams, the life I love.

Until one day I simply decided it was time to stop. I chose to wake up.

Finally there came a day when I simply couldn’t take it anymore and so I made the decision that it was time to stop. I made the decision to change the way I was living and to jump off of the treadmill. I made the decision to change my life. I made the decision to begin living my life on my terms.

The effect was magical. A thousand pound weight was lifted off my shoulders. I felt relieved. I felt alive. I felt inspired. I began actually enjoying my life.

And so now here I am suggesting to you that you can begin to live the life you want – the life you love – right now beginning today.

Because all it really takes is for you to make the decision.

Oh, I know that sounds simplistic. Yet it’s true, and deep down there’s a part of you that knows it’s true.

By truly making that decision – that single, mental decision – everything changes. Everything changes because your perspective changes.

For me, my decision led to some very explicit actions. I resigned from my job and decided to build my own business with my wife Michelle, from home. Frankly I had no idea how any of it was going to work and how we’d be able to pay the bills or keep the kids fed and clothed, except that I believed it would. Looking back now, I suppose I just knew it would.

Well, go figure, things have worked out beautifully. The sky didn’t fall. The world didn’t end. Things have certainly changed, mind you. We don’t hang out with all of the same people we used to. Our activities have become more focused on family and friends as opposed to fitting things around my job. We live a much more relaxed life. We have more fun. We have fun every day.

What about you? What do you love? What are the things you’d love to do right now with your life? Can you feel them calling you?

If you can, then listen to and follow them. For there is one thing that is absolutely true: there is no need to struggle in your life. You make real whatever you believe is real. This is the basic law of the universe, the law of attraction.

So the first thing to do is to let go of the notion that it’s different for you ,or that somehow you are not allowed to live the life you want. Let go of the notion that you’re somehow not deserving of that privilege. Stop marginalizing yourself.

You deserve to be happy and enjoy your life. That’s the whole point of living – to experience the joy of it.

Yes, the entire idea of following your bliss can be extremely frightening. And fear leads to all sorts of wild emotions, but that’s part of being human. Remember though, fear is all in your head. It’s all about what you imagine might happen. Those wild emotions that you feel as a result of your fears need not define you.

In his book, Conversations With God, Neale Donald Walsh tells us we have three tools of creation. They are thought, words, and action. It is your thoughts, your words, and your actions that define you – for they are the summation of who you are being.

So this begs the question, who do you want to be?

Get in touch with your own truth about who you want to be and then start being that person right now, today. Begin to live your passion and enjoy your life. It’s much easier than you suspect. It’s remarkably easy to let the “how” unfold; just let your inspiration be your guide.

Your inspiration will never misguide you. By being focused on who and what you want to be, you will be inspired to think the thoughts, speak the words and take the actions that make that being your reality. The more you are being, the more you’ll be doing and the more you’ll be having what you want. The more you will be living the life that you love. And so the circle repeats, over and over, with each cycle more strongly reinforcing who you are and what you love to be.

It’s a magnificent thing. It’s freedom.

And so now it is time for you to begin your path to living the life you love. Begin living the life you want right now.

Begin by making the decision to be happy with your life right now. Begin today.

20 WAYS TO TELL SOMEONE “NO”

By Ramona Creel

On September 16, 2009

Tell me if this sounds familiar — someone asks you to do something that you really don’t want to do or you honestly don’t have time for. It might be a church bake sale, a school fundraiser, participating on a committee, or even just working late. But you feel like you will let the other person down if you say no. You feel GUILTY already, and you haven’t even responded yet! So you say, “Sure,” even though doing so is going to put you under tremendous stress and PRESSURE. You know that you will probably end up resenting this activity, and maybe even ducking some of your responsibilities because your heart’s just not in it, but you go ahead and agree anyway.

Why are we so afraid to tell people “no”? For some reason, we have been taught that “no” is DISRESPECTFUL — and even insulting. We seem to value other people’s time more than our own — feeling that we need to bend over backward to accommodate others, even if it inconveniences us. I know we’re atoning for the “me” 1980′s, but let’s be reasonable! “No” is actually one of the healthiest words that can come out of your mouth. When you tell someone “no,” you are really saying that you understand and accept your own LIMITS, and don’t want to do a shoddy job by overwhelming yourself. That you value your time and priorities and aren’t willing to take away from the truly important things in your life. A little selfishness is necessary, if you want to maintain a balanced and sane life!

So how do you say “no” without insulting the other person, feeling consumed with guilt, or hurting your own credibility? We need to find a way to say “no” without dragging up all of those HIDDEN FEARS — they’ll think I’m lazy or selfish, that I have no career drive, that I’m not ambitious, that I have no concern for other people. And it’s time to give up all of those roles you’re so proud of — supermom, martyr, hero — but are keeping you from finding true peace. Once you’ve accepted that you have the right (and often responsibility) to turn someone down, you can do it in a way that doesn’t seem like a REJECTION. Let me show you how:

“I CAN’T RIGHT NOW, BUT I CAN DO IT LATER”

If you really want to help the person but don’t have time now, tell them so. Offer a later time or date — if they can’t wait for you they will find someone else.

“I’M REALLY NOT THE MOST QUALIFIED PERSON FOR THE JOB”

If you don’t feel that you have adequate skills to take on a task, that’s okay. It’s better to admit your limitations up front than feel overwhelmed down the road.

“I JUST DON’T HAVE ANY ROOM IN MY CALENDAR RIGHT NOW”

Be honest if your schedule is filled — and “filled” doesn’t have to mean really FILLED! It just means you have scheduled as much as you are willing and you’re stopping.

“I CAN’T, BUT LET ME GIVE YOU THE NAME OF SOMEONE WHO CAN”

If you aren’t available to help out, offer another qualified resource. Professionals do this all the time when they refer a client to a colleague.

“I HAVE ANOTHER COMMITMENT”

And it doesn’t matter what that commitment is. It could be a meeting or a dentist appointment or a day in the park with your kid. The point is, you aren’t available.

“I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF SEVERAL PROJECTS AND CAN’T SPARE THE TIME”

Let people know when you have already accepted other responsibilities — no one is going to fault you for having already filled your plate.

“I’VE HAD A FEW THINGS COME UP AND I NEED TO DEAL WITH THOSE FIRST”

Unexpected things happen that throw your schedule off — it happens. So accept that you may need to make a few adjustments until your life stabilizes again.

“I WOULD RATHER DECLINE THAN END UP DOING A MEDIOCRE JOB”

Knowing that you aren’t able to deliver a quality product — for whatever reason — is reason enough for turning a request down.

“I’M REALLY FOCUSING MORE ON MY PERSONAL AND FAMILY LIFE RIGHT NOW”

People act ashamed of wanting to spend time with their families — like it means they don’t have goals. Having a strong family is a goal in and of itself!

“I’M REALLY FOCUSING MORE ON MY CAREER RIGHT NOW”

The reverse is true also — you may have to give up some civic or community duties to focus your energies on a work-related task (and that’s fine, too!)

“I REALLY DON’T ENJOY THAT KIND OF WORK”

Who said you were supposed to enjoy your chores and assignments?! Well, if you don’t enjoy them, why do them? Life isn’t about drudgery and boredom.

“I CAN’T, BUT I’M HAPPY TO HELP OUT WITH ANOTHER TASK”

If someone asks you to do something you really despise, refuse — but then offer to help with something you find more enjoyable or stimulating.

“I’VE LEARNED IN THE PAST THAT THIS REALLY ISN’T MY STRONG SUIT”

Another way of admitting your limitations. Did you know that actually makes you stronger? Knowing what you can handle and what you can’t is a tremendous talent!

“I’M SURE YOU WILL DO A WONDERFUL JOB ON YOUR OWN”

Many times, people ask for help because they doubt their own abilities. Let the other person know that you have confidence that they will succeed.

“I DON’T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THAT, SO I CAN’T HELP YOU”

Volunteering to help out shouldn’t mean that you have to learn an entirely new set of skills. Offer to help out with something you already know how to do.

“I’M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT”

You might be uncomfortable with the people involved, the type of work, the moral implications — this is a very respectful way to avoid a sticky situation.

“I HATE TO SPLIT MY ATTENTION AMONG TOO MANY PROJECTS”

Let people know that you want to do a good job for them — but that you can’t when your focus is too divided or splintered.

“I’M COMMITTED TO LEAVING SOME TIME FOR MYSELF IN MY SCHEDULE”

Selfish, selfish, selfish! But in a good way! Treat your personal time like any other appointment — block it off in your calendar and guard it with your life!

“I’M NOT TAKING ON ANY NEW PROJECTS RIGHT NOW”

You aren’t saying that you will never help out again — just that you feel your schedule is as full as you would like right now.

“NO”

Sometimes it’s okay just to say no! Just make sure that you say it in a way that expresses respect and courtesy — that leaves the door open for good relations.

During the night

How often have you found yourself lying in bed thinking: “If only I could relax, I’d be able to sleep”? Well, there has to be truth in that. A relaxed state, physically and mentally, is certainly a prerequisite for sleep, and we know that naturally relaxed people are usually better sleepers.

Relaxation at bedtime and in bed is crucial, but sleep is not something that can be forced because it is a process of “de-arousal” or “letting go”. Fortunately, learning to relax is a general skill and it is possible to learn to relax, even if you’re not very good at it just now. It can help in a number of circumstances to take a less anxious approach. Being able to relax is great preparation for sleep, but it’s also a great asset for day–to–day life too.

What is relaxation?

First of all you need to know what relaxation is. The human relaxation response involves both physiological and mental changes. Physiologically, relaxation is associated with deeper and slower breathing, a reduction in “muscle tone” (reduced tension) and a lowering of the heart rate. At the cognitive or mental level, relaxation involves detachment from the immediate external world, a focus on pleasant sensations or experiences, and a reduction of mental effort and anxiety.

Your first step in becoming more relaxed is to ask yourself whether you could benefit from improving your ability to relax – your natural “relaxation response”.

Why is relaxation important?

Some people are better at relaxing than others; they seem to be able to do it quickly and naturally. Others face the challenge of learning to relax, but all of us could improve our relaxation skills. It matters to know how to relax because stress affects us biologically and psychologically, and an ability to relax helps us to handle stress and to maximise our productivity. It’s not just major life stresses here either – it’s also the daily hassles that are part of everyday experience. The relaxation response is the flip side of the stress response coin.

Learning to value relaxation

Do you think it’s important to relax? People who don’t value relaxation don’t spend time on it. They might say it’s important, but in their behaviour, you would never know. Our lives can be full of shoulds, musts and ought-tos, and we often don’t give ourselves permission to relax. We might even feel that we shouldn’t relax because there are “things that need to be done”. Does any of this sound familiar? If so, your challenge is learning a value system. We are not designed to be on the go 24 hours a day.

General ways to relax

Whereas it’s true that people relax in different ways, there are four essential types of relaxation response. There is the relaxation response that you get from active physical pursuits – “burning up” physical stress through activities such as exercise. Then there are active mental tasks such as playing chess to address mental stress. Then there is passive relaxation, which is more like “letting go”, for example physically by having a bath or mentally by listening to music. Of course, there is no hard and fast distinction between active and passive, or physical and mental, but good sleepers are better than poor sleepers at the passive approach to relaxation.

Specific relaxation techniques

There are two specific techniques that have been shown to help get your mind and body into a relaxed state, ready for sleep. Progressive muscle relaxation involves the systematic tensing and deep relaxation of your body’s major muscle groups, leading to a decrease in muscle activity, blood pressure and heart rate.

Imagery training is focused more on mental tension, and involves immersing yourself in a pleasant visual scene and heightening sensory awareness, leading to improved control of your mind and an ability to distract your thinking. Both relaxation techniques also include focusing on perceptions of heaviness and deep breathing associated with letting go, and take 10-12 minutes to complete. Practice is very important so that you get to know the exercises and can use them whenever you need them.

Which technique will help you?

Imagery training is more focused on mental tension, and since it involves no physical movement it is particularly well suited to those with muscular pains or cramps or with joint problems. Progressive relaxation is effective in relieving physical as well as mental tension. But by trying both techniques you can make up your own mind which one suits you best. Over time you will be able to see which is more effective for you.

However, a word of advice; do try them both and stick at them for a little while. If one or the other comes more naturally, that could mean it’s the one for you; but also bear in mind that the more difficult one might indicate that this is the type of relaxation you need to spend a bit of time mastering. If you don’t experience any difficulties, then maybe you could become skilled in using both techniques.

The following excerpts will give you an idea of what each technique involves …

1 Progressive muscle relaxation

” … Turn your attention to your arms and hands. Create some tension in your hands and arms by pressing your fingers into the palms of your hands and making fists. Do that with both hands now. Feel the tension in your hands, feel the tension in your fingers and your wrists, feel the tension in your forearms. Notice what it is like. Keep it going … and now relax. Let those hands flop. Let them do whatever they want to do; just let them relax. Breathing slowly and deeply, you will find that your fingers will just straighten out and flop, and your hands and arms will feel more relaxed. Allow them to sink into the bed; just allow your arms to be heavy. Breathing slowly and deeply, thinking the word ”relax” each time you breathe out, and finding that your hands and arms just relax more and more and more. Your arms and your hands are so heavy and rested. It’s almost as if you couldn’t be bothered to move them. Let go of the energy and tension that was in the muscles there, breathing slowly and deeply. Both your hands, both your arms, heavy and rested and relaxed … “

2 Imagery training

” … Keeping your eyes gently closed, concentrate on picturing a pleasant scene. Picture yourself standing on a grassy slope. Look down at your feet – there is green grass all around you, the kind that grows well in the summer months. It looks thick and strong – it looks healthy. Just ahead of you, you will see there is the beginning of a path, and as you look down that path, you can see it winds down through some bushes, to a beautiful sandy beach, and beyond to the sea, a deep, clear blue. You can see the contrasts of all these colours, the rich green of the grass, the pale brown of the path, the yellow gold of the sand, and the deep blue of the sea. And as you stand on that grassy slope, as you look around you, you feel the breeze, warm and gentle on your cheek, and you feel the sun on your head, warming the back of your neck. It is a beautiful morning … “

Most of us have a tendency to believe somehow that, every thing that unexpectedly happens to us happens for any reason. Out of this basic point we then accept that one thing leads us on to another. We need therefore to secure our past heartaches, embarrassments and failure. They must be treated as teachers only and nothing else. They are going to become tools in self improvement PLR and building success. They’ve not one other role within our future that people are setting out to build, while using principal with the loa. They has to be locked away while they will cause self doubt, undermine our attitude and cause the find it difficult to make contact with our normal belief system that we’ve been socially and environmentally programmed to accept.

Remember the film called “Patch Adams”. It’s a good film to examine since it will help you to improve yourself. Patch fails his exams being a medical student and after months of melancholy, goes into depression and also considers suicide. Ultimately to find medical assistance he voluntarily admits himself in a psychiatric ward… His months inside the ward meeting really sick and mental patients helps build back his resolve to help others and the man still wants to become doctor.

With this particular he carries within himself an optimistic attitude anyone would be proud to emulate into our very own lives. The truth is him in the film not only influence himself but others around him and also the actual total well being for those within the hospital area of influence. Naturally he becomes the most effective doctor his country has seen. When does self improvement MRR become synonymous with success? Take these guidelines;

1. Stop feeling and thinking just like you really are a failure you are not when you have stayed reading this article up to now. Accept each new challenge, how can others accept you unless you accept you.

2. If you notice those beautiful people on tv and in magazines, think more on self improvement RR, not self pitying. Self esteem is not about our visual image but on a belief individuals inner beauty.

3. When you discover individuals that ‘re feeling glum and down, help them to maneuver up. Start with which makes them smile and maintain your voice bright and happy, you’ll be surprised how this can change others moods. Don’t let them drag you right down to their level. They are able to using their negativity pull you down further through joint self pity and you wind up feeling inferior

4. Everyone around you that we live in is for learning, taking lessons in everyday life skills. Don’t feel stupid and doomed forever more than a mistake. There is always the next time, remember to master out of this mistake and figure out how to learn from others mistakes. Let each other no you have learned using their mistake and make them fix the issue if possible. This is team and success building. Always make room for self improvement.

5. Take your steps forward individually. Don’t expect to turn into a goody two shoes overnight. Success in self improvement can be a a measure at the same time process, that may include some setbacks. It’s a process that you’ll run at your own pace, not that of others.

6. Self esteem, self appreciation and self confidence are the inspiration of Self Improvement. The results are inner stability, personality development and most of all SUCCESS.

7. Set goals that are achievable and are meaningful for your requirements. We want to improve and better you and nobody else. Others can build off your making success, as you can build of theirs but your goals must be for only you alone. We are in the market to improve and better YOU.

8. Remember fondly the tiny problems in everyday life, be polite, give appreciation personally not in writing or emails. It’s all the other things your system says, that carry the content when you mean it to be heard ie your five senses.

9. Self improvement is definitely an individual step that are only achieved if your state of mind is ready for that change. If its not then you’ll build blocks for your progress. First and foremost it’s really a lonely journey which you cannot force even other people you know down when they are not mentally prepared for your belief system changes how the Loa may bring as well as force upon us.

10. Last of all but most importantly, there is no such thing as overnight Success. It certainly is a wonderful feeling to carry onto all that you currently have now. Realizing those are just some of the things that you’ve previously wished/hoped for can be a key for your right of passage to Self Improvement and Success.

11. Utilize all the aids that you could find from mind mapping right through to audio programmes. It takes a great deal to change enforced beliefs

Your attitude will determine a lot, we’ve all heard the glass half full or glass half empty way of looking at things, both are the same thing, but are vastly distinctive as well. You have the prospective to transform/change your life and achieve new heights of success and fulfilment. Whether at this second in time your attitude is positive, negative or somewhere in the middle you can take control of your life and set yourself free! Everyone has likely, the unfortunate thing is that most people go through life and absolutely not realise or take advantage of this!

Firstly you must visualize what you want – you the desires absolutely everyone has – Unfortunately most people go away from them as just that, dreams. The second thing that you must do is see/visualize yourself in your dream setting, and see/visualize yourself getting there. I can, I will and when I are the things you must say rather than the negative version I can’t, I won’t and if I! Don’t be uneasy if you fall into a more/lot more/much more negative category – the wonderful thing about attitude is that you can discover and train yourself to have a positive one given a bit of time and practice.

You’ve instructed yourself that it is going to take place and now must speak about it by doing this you are generating yourself accountable and putting yourself under a little stress to make it take place! If your dream is to be on Millionaire road and you are at the moment in financial debt – you must realise that this dream is not going to come about overnight in may take a handful of years – you don’t go around saying you are going to be a millionaire by next Thursday afternoon in three weeks time! Don’t set unrealistic targets otherwise you may put yourself under undue tension and pressure to obtain, which can be harmful to your cause.

Attitude isn’t everything – it is basically the first thing! Keep in mind it’s going to be action that truly gets you there and the attitude will determine what pace that will be. You are the architect, the builder and the benefactor of all your life’s endeavours. So when something doesn’t go your way the first place to look is inwards/at yourself. You must ask yourself what you could have done in a different way to have gotten a more favourable outcome, after this inward analysis is done then you look at some of the exterior issues that may have been skip/or over looked too.

Every person has their fears; I don’t mean things like scared of the dark or spiders etc. I am talking about fears to do with success, for example, it might be something that you haven’t recognized to do yet, and you fear that you may fall short. Keep in mind that if you don’t try you fail anyway, and if you do fail sometimes then success is that much sweeter because you basically had to get over hurdles to get to the end outcome.

In summary we’ll use something intriguing to illustrate a point. There are 26 letters in the alphabet, A = 1 and Z = 26 functioning on that basis we assign a number to each letter of the word attitude and add them up:
A(1) + T(20) + T(20) + I(9) + T(20) + U(21) + D(4) + E(5) = 100 – 100% Attitude!
Having a positive or optimistic attitude aids you to achieve more for yourself than a negative or pessimistic one. Visualise what you want, take action to make it transpire, overcome any fears and keep plugging away, remember that tree that you see in your local park didn’t get that big overnight. You can learn to train your mind, and over time you will learn how to develop and sustain a positive attitude.
